Minimalist design in tight spaces
A handmade espresso machine of Dutch design. The Naked Espresso Maker excels in simplicity. No digital displays, just 1 light. The rectangular stainless steel boiler in the tempered glass casing gives the machine a unique look. Do you think the boiler looks like a gold bar? That's right and the effect is enhanced by pressing the logo into it instead of engraving or etching. All fittings in the machine are from Serto.
It is a typical example of close cooperation between supplier and OEM manufacturer. We were allowed to contribute ideas early on in the development process, initially about the Serto couplings used which are polished by hand. We advised to change the design of the boiler, so that no hub is used, which saves expensive welding. It results in a minimalist design, with the Serto coupling screwed in, sealing 10 bar on an o-ring. The risk of failure is also lower with this type of coupling, as assembly with an o-ring is less tight, even if the joint has been loosened and tightened several times. A side effect is better temperature stability.

Another advantage of Serto couplings for this application is the small radius, which allows for very small constructions. And this is further enhanced by the radial mounting of Serto, so no fixed sequence of assembly is required.
During the development process there was a switch from welded to drawn stainless steel pipe, because welded pipe could not be made leakproof. This is a more common effect, because the thermal influence of the weld causes the material structure to change and the tube to harden locally. As a result, the ferrule does not work optimally locally.
The list of notable design choices is almost endless. For example, they wanted the boiler to be the only indication light of the appliance. But because there are no electronics that can withstand those temperatures, the choice was made to place the light source at the bottom of the appliance, and to go through the boiler with a light guide. Another beautiful design feature is the manometer, executed as a tubeless spring. It was specifically developed for this unit by Badotherm and calibrated with a different value, 9 bar. Furthermore a lot of attention has been paid to making the unit as quiet as possible. The rotary pump (a conventional vibration pump) and an inductive relay contribute to this.
