Electromagnetic flow meters are based on Faraday's law. Professor Faraday showed that a response voltage is generated in the conductor when it is moved in a magnetic field. The flow meter consists of an open tube with an electrically insulating material inside. At the top and bottom side there are coils that create a magnetic field. Then there are 2 electrodes arranged perpendicular to the magnetic field lines. When a conductive medium flows through the tube, a voltage is measured on the electrodes that is proportional to the velocity of the liquid.
De formula is U = v . B . D
U = the measured voltage through the electrodes
v = the speed of the medium
B = the magnetic field strength
D = the distance between the electrodes, in this case the diameter of the measuring tube
